The short version
Capstone Files indexes files on your own computer and keeps that index on your own computer. We never receive your files, file names, file contents, or searches.
What stays on your computer
- The search index (file names, extracted text, dates, locations, and other details found inside your documents).
- Thumbnails of your photos.
- Your settings, including the passcode for iPad access.
All of this lives in a folder on your computer and is deleted when you delete that folder or uninstall the app.
What we do receive
The app makes one kind of network request on its own: a license check. It sends the email address you subscribed with, your license key, a one-way hash of your computer's hardware identifier (so we can count computers, not identify them), a name for the computer that you can see in the app, the operating system version, and the app version. It runs when you activate and about once a day afterward.
When you subscribe, Stripe collects your payment details and shares your email address and subscription status with us. We never see your card number.
What we do not do
- We do not upload, scan, read, or store any of your files or their contents.
- We do not see what you search for.
- We do not sell or share personal information, and we do not use advertising trackers.
Optional cloud connectors
If you choose to sign in to a cloud service from inside the app, the app talks directly to that service from your computer using a token stored in your operating system's credential store. That token is not sent to us.
iPad and phone access
If you turn on Phone & iPad access, your computer serves the app to devices on the same local network, protected by a passcode. Nothing is relayed through our servers.
Your rights
Email us to see or delete the account information we hold (your email, license, and the list of activated computers). Deleting the app's data folder removes everything stored locally.
